SHILLONG, Jan 6: Although it is known that the Congress candidate from the Shillong seat is sitting MP, Vincent H Pala, but for the Tura seat the curtains are yet to be lifted.
“Right now no one has been decided, there might be three aspiring candidates,” said Gambegre MLA and Congress leader, Saleng A Sangma.
When told that his name is also among the aspiring candidates for Tura seat, Saleng said he is not too sure about it at the moment.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, Vincent H Pala, had earlier told The Shillong Times that there are some young groups that want Saleng to be the party candidate from Tura, while some Mahila groups are in favour of Deborah Marak running for the seat.
It may be mentioned that Deborah Marak has been the only Congress candidate who came close to defeating the Sangma family insofar as Lok Sabha polls from Tura are concerned. However, Saleng lately has evolved as a vocal and popular leader from the Garo Hills region.
Making it clear that the party has not made a decision on the candidate, Pala said that the MPCC will have to work very hard in Garo Hills this time to snatch away the seat from NPP.
Meanwhile, when asked that the Tura seat has been a strong bastion of the Late PA Sangma family and will the Congress be able to dislodge them from the seat, Saleng said, “Everything is the call of the people. May be they have not found the right individual for the right place”.
