SHILLONG, Feb 4: Leader of Opposition in the KHADC, Titosstarwell Chyne on Sunday reiterated the demand for the Council elections to be held as scheduled notwithstanding the prevailing brouhaha over extension of the terms of the KHADC and JHADC.
The state government has extended the tenure of the two district councils by six months. The decision was taken by the state Cabinet which met on Friday. It followed the Cabinet’s approval of the proposal for the extension of the terms of the incumbent Executive Committees of both ADCs.
“I have already given in statement before the extension. Now, what can I say as the government has already decided and our tenure has also ended. Election is due in February but now what can we do,” said Chyne.
He, however, observed that the elections should be held as scheduled. “Right now, the only reason I see that they have extended the house is for the delimitation committee (to complete the exercise)”.
He expressed surprised at the delimitation committee being formed just two months before the elections.
“Had I formed the delimitation committee during my tenure that would have been a different case, but at that time, there was neither representation nor any application demanding delimitation of constituency. Some MDCs have expressed that they want the same constituency for the MDCs like the MLAs and we had also prepared a file,” he said.
Asked if he is unhappy with the extension of the term, he said, “It is not a question of happy or unhappy. It is not our personal interest. To continue to be the MDC after the completion of the tenure, it is not our right and property. The people have elected us for five years so let us remain for five years, why should there be an extension”.
