SHILLONG, Feb 8: While a majority of the state’s political parties have declared their candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the BJP is yet to take a call on who should run for the seats in the state.
BJP Meghalaya in-charge, M Chuba Ao told The Shillong Times on Thursday that the party is making the required calculations to determine which candidate would be more popular with voters.
It should be noted that three to four candidates are vying for the Tura seat, while at least two leaders from Shillong have applied for the party tickets to run in the polls.
He said that the party would not begin campaigning until the elections were announced. He asserted that although Meghalayan voters had supported regional parties in the previous elections, he was receiving reports this time that the public was in the mood to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Besides the BJP, the TMC is the only party yet to name its candidates for the polls. The NPP, VPP, and UDP have already announced their candidates while the Congress has forwarded the names of sitting Lok Sabha member Vincent H Pala from Shillong, and Gambegre MLA Saleng A Sangma from Tura, to the party high command for confirmation.
