SHILLONG, Feb 28: To promote science and mathematics education in the state, Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma said that from 2025 science and mathematics will be made mandatory subjects in the school educational curriculum.
Sangma emphasised that the new curriculum will cater to students of all abilities, ensuring inclusivity and effective learning, while speaking on the sidelines of the National Science Day, at the State Convention Centre, here on Wednesday.
“We will design a curriculum accordingly which will suit the weak, the average, the brilliant, and the talented ones. We will design a curriculum in such a way that it will not have any negative impact on any of the students at all levels,” Sangma stated.
According to MBoSE rules in 2016, a student must clear five out of the six subjects in the SSLC exams. The student is considered passed if he/she meets the criterion, even if the failed subject is maths or science.
Moreover, Sangma unveiled three innovative projects aimed at improving science and mathematics education in Meghalaya.
These initiatives include ‘Queen’s Gambit,’ utilizing chess concepts for problem-solving and aptitude development, ‘Meghalaya Star 30’, providing coaching for competitive exams like NEET and JEE, and Tech Tutor which explores science and mathematics in virtual classrooms.
The event, organized by the State Council of Science Technology and Environment (SCSTE) in collaboration with the Shillong Science Centre and the Science Department of Shillong College, celebrated National Science Day 2024 under the theme ‘Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat’.
The programme saw the presence of dignitaries including Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary & Developmental Commissioner, and Gunanka D B Joint Secretary, Planning Department & Member Secretary, SCSTE, Meghalaya.
During the event, meritorious students who excelled in science, technology, and mathematics in the secondary and higher secondary MBoSE Examinations 2022-2023 were also felicitated.
