SHILLONG: The Opposition UDP has constituted a three-member fact-finding committee to look into the controversial eviction drive at Umsawli.

“The committee will collect all the relevant records and information relating to the claim and counter-claims of both MUDA and local settlers,” UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh announced here on Monday.

Lyngdoh said that the committee would try go deep into the matter “since MUDA has claimed that they have acquired the land after paying the necessary compensation to the concerned land owners.”

The UDP working president that the committee, to be led by Shillong City UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar, has been given three days time to complete its task.

Enrollment drive: Lyngdoh also informed that his party had submitted a petition to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Prashant Naik asking him to stop the ongoing enrollment of the temporary residents of the State in poll roll.

Expressing concern over the enrollment drive carried out at Madanriting, Lyngdoh said the decision to enroll these temporary residents goes against the provision of the Constitution which says one citizen should have only one vote.

Questioning the enrollment of the Service people including the army personnel, the UDP working president said that a person having service qualification could be enrolled as service voter at his native place even if he resides at a different place i.e. at the place of posting.

“It is illegal to enroll them into the electoral rolls of the State since they already have their names registered in their native places,” Lyngdoh said.

The UDP working president said that the party apprehends that this exercise was carried at the behest of Congress which always depends on the votes of ‘doubtful voters.’
