song bandh in western Assam has been called from Tuesday till November 25 by non-Rabha bodies opposed to Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council(RHAC) elections in their areas, which are slated to begin with a three-phase schedule from November 13.

The non-Rabha organisations have been demanding exclusion of non-Rabha villages from RHAC areas. They have been carrying out various agitational activities, which had been intensified since the announcement of the election schedule more than a month back.

The protesting bodies today called for a bandh till November 25, when the election schedule will end, in the RHAC areas.

Meanwhile, violence continued in the run-up to the RHAC polls.

Three schools, including a private school, were set afire by unknown miscreants in Goalpara district last night.

An Improvised Explosive Device was recovered in the district this morning, which was later defused by the Army’s bomb experts.

Another IED was recovered in the district on Sunday also, while four IEDs were found on railway tracks a couple of days back.

The Assam State Election Commission had announced a three-phase polling for the RHAC in Goalpara and southern Kamrup districts to be held between November 13 and 25.

Simultaneous polls for some panchayats in Goalpara district, which were countermanded in February after violence in the Rabha Hasong areas, will also be held on November 20 and 27. (UNI)
