SHILLONG, April 7: The aftereffects of the BJP central leadership’s decision to opt out of the Lok Sabha elections and support NPP candidate in the state is seemingly becoming more visible with over 1,500 grassroots leaders and workers from the BJP joining the TMC in Garo Hills region.
“Today, over 1500 grassroots leaders and workers from the BJP have officially joined our Trinamool Congress family. We welcome each and every one of our new members with open arms,” said president of Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) Richard Marak.
Marak said, “The overwhelming turnout of more than 500 individuals from Tarapara and over 700 from Magurmari, both under the Salmanpara constituency, demonstrates the growing support for our vision of progress and inclusivity”.
The BJP members joined the TMC in the presence of TMC candidate for Tura parliamentary seat, Zenith Sangma.
It may be recalled that the BJP had earlier inordinately delayed the announcement of its candidate for the two Lok Sabha constituencies in the state.
Later, the BJP dispelled speculations that it may not contest the polls from the two parliamentary seats in order to extend support to the NPP.
Wild speculations were fuelled that the saffron party wanted to play safe by paving the way for NPP, its NDA coalition partner, thereby wresting any possibility of a Congress victory.
