SHILLONG: The newly-formed organisation Kynhun Nongtrei Monsngewbha (KNM) has decided to submit a petition to the Union Home Ministry opposing the Centre’s proposed move to amend the Sixth Schedule.

The organisation passed a resolution in this regard during a public meeting held at National Dorbar Hall here on Thursday.

The meeting felt that the Sixth Schedule in its present form is vague and needs to be strengthened. “But instead of doing this, the Centre has proposed to do away with it which is not at all acceptable,” the meeting opined.

“We would submit the petition within a week’s time,” KNM joint convener W Anthony said after the meeting.

He also said that they would be submitting the petition to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. Copies of the petition would be forwarded to Shillong MP Vincent Pala, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and District Council Affairs (DCA) Minister HDR Lyngdoh.

Anthony said that they also decided to start a movement to oppose the proposed amendment.

“The proposed amendment aims at bringing Panchayat system under the purview of Sixth Schedule. This would destroy the uniqueness of our age-old traditional system,” Anthony said.

The meeting, which was chaired by KNM convener Dr Iaithrang Lyngdoh Nongrbi, was addressed by UDP East Khasi Hills youth president Hamlet Dohling, HSPDP member Shem Rynjah, Sordar of Hat Mawdon Jai Skhemlon and KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum.
