SHILLONG, April 27: One more KSU member was arrested by Shillong Police in connection with the gruesome murder of two individuals in Ichamati village of East Khasi Hills recently.
The Superintendent of Police of East Khasi Hills, Rituraj Ravi, said that an accused, identified as Osternic Marbaniang (34), a resident of Jaiaw, Laitdom, was arrested from Jaiaw on Saturday.
On March 27, two persons were allegedly beaten to death by miscreants at Ichamati. The victims were identified as (L) Esan Singh and (L) Sujit Dutta, both labourers working in limestone quarries. Their bodies were found at Ichamati and Dalda respectively.
According to the FIR filed by family members of the deceased, the incident took place during an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protest in Ichamati.
The district police chief has further appealed to the people to maintain peace and order. “All miscreants who act in a manner to breach law and order will be strictly dealt with as per law,” the SP said
Earlier, a few more KSU members were arrested for their involvement in the heinous murder.
It may also be noted that the KSU has issued a warning to the police about a possible law-and-order problem if they continue to arrest their members.
In view of this, the East Khasi Hills district administration is mulling involvement of community leaders and traditional institutions to ensure peace and also to secure information on cases of crimes.
The law-and-order situation in Shillong seems to be on a downward slide after KSU issued a warning that there will be problems if police continue to arrest its members in connection with the recent murder cases in Ichamati and Mawlai Mawroh, where a labourer was thrashed to death.
The administration is planning to hold a meeting with the stakeholders next week.
