SHILLONG, April 27: More than 70 residents of Nartiang descended upon the state capital on Saturday underscoring the ramification of the recent incidents of petrol bomb attacks that seem to have triggered security concern.
The residents of various villages under the Nartiang constituency condemned the attack on the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The residents, from all walks of life, who gathered at the Shillong Press Club on Saturday, denounced the act, stating that it was a manifestation of hatred towards their legislator.
“There is a sense of fear and panic among the residents of the villages,” said Mutshwa Thabah, Rangbah Shnong of Sohpoh village under Nartiang.
The residents called upon the authorities to nab the culprits.
On the other hand, the Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Saturday condemned the petrol bomb attack on Dhar’s residence and asked the government to take immediate and appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in future.
“The recent incidents involving petrol bomb attacks on the residence of the Deputy Chief Minister and an escort vehicle of the Director of NEEPCO highlight security concerns, vulnerabilities and potential breaches of law and order within the city,” VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh said.
“It is imperative that immediate and appropriate measures are taken to address these incidents and reinforce public safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” he said.
He also said that upholding law and order is essential to safeguard the well-being and security of residents. It is incumbent upon relevant authorities to ensure the maintenance of a peaceful and tranquil environment, he added.
Myrboh emphasised on the prompt implementation of measures to restore the confidence of people in the city’s security infrastructure and uphold the principles of safety and stability for all citizens. “We strongly condemn the act. We urge the authorities concerned to identify those responsible and bring them to justice at the earliest,” he said.
The VPP spokesperson said the party would like to advise the government to ensure that there is a sense of justice, fairness and impartiality, without which the society will be thrown into instability and chaos.
