SHILLONG, April 29: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has urged Rajya Sabha member, Rakesh Sinha, to help expand the tourism sector beyond Kongthong village in East Khasi Hills district.
In 2019, the MP had adopted Kongthong village, also known as ‘Whistling Village’.
During a meeting with Sinha in the national capital on Sunday, Lyngdoh said provision of similar attention to the neighbouring villages will result in improvement of tourism sector.
According to the Tourism Minister, he also impressed on Sinha the promotion of cultural exchange between the villages in Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block and the national capital.
“I have also suggested promoting the unique tradition of the people of Khatarshnong area known as known as ‘Jingrwai Iawbei’,” Lyngdoh added.
It may be mentioned that besides Kongthong, Sinha had also announced that he would adopt three more villages in Meghalaya, viz. Mawmang and Sder in the Khatarshnong Laitkroh C&RD Block of East Khasi Hills district and Mawshut in the Mairang Tehsil of West Khasi Hills district.
Over the last few years, Kongthong, which had also been included in one of the three entries for the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s ‘Best Tourism Village’, has become one of the main tourist attractions in the state.
