TURA, May 5: A social activist from Tura, Cherian Momin has raised concern over soaring temperatures and dwindling water sources in Garo Hills and warned that the region is heading towards an environmental crisis due to rampant deforestation, illegal mining and erratic weather patterns.
“The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat—it’s here, and it’s affecting us all. The once-thriving ecosystem of Garo Hills has been decimated by human greed and exploitation. It’s time for urgent action to protect our environment and our future,” Momin said.
Garo Hills has been experiencing a significant decline in forest cover, with illegal logging and coal mining wreaking havoc on the landscape. This loss of natural habitat has disrupted the delicate balance of the ecosystem, leading to dwindling water sources and increasing temperatures.
According to Momin, in addition to water shortages, farmers are struggling to cope with the changing climate, as erratic rainfall patterns and soaring temperatures threaten their livelihoods. Many are facing crop failures and economic hardship as a result, he said.
Momin, while pointing out that the situation, although bad, was not too late, urged the government to act and take steps to control illegal mining and enforce environmental laws.
He also raised the need to invest in sustainable practices to protect forests and water sources for future generations.
