MAWKYRWAT, May 13: The KSU, Mawkyrwat Circle, has voiced concern over the rising number of drug users in Mawkyrwat area of South West Khasi Hills.
This surge has led to destructive consequences for the youth, with many becoming involved in criminal activities, including recent arrests linked to a murder case.
Addressing the media, union president, Rutherford Lyngdoh emphasised the urgency of the situation, highlighting escalating criminal incidents such as theft and violence.
Lyngdoh urged Dorbar Shnongs, youth as well as women’s organisations, pressure groups, police department and the district administration to collaborate effectively in combating the drug problem.
Additionally, Lyngdoh called upon the Home department to ensure proper functioning of the ANTF in the district, while underscoring the importance of practical measures to tackle the drug menace.
Concerns were also raised regarding the influx of outsiders offering drugs, prompting a plea for stricter screening by the district administration and a warning to local contractors against hiring individuals without proper documentation.
