SHILLONG: Principal Secretary of Transport Department on Saturday stated that the trend of discrimination for HIV infected patients is quite less in tribal societies.

Addressing the gathering during the two day State level event on HIV and AIDS, Yeshi Tsering mentioned that AIDS was a serious challenge and needed to be wiped out.

This year, the theme is “Zero AIDS Related Death, Zero New Infections & Zero Discrimination.”

While asserting that an HIV positive individual should not feel neglected, he cautioned HIV positive people to be careful to ensure that the virus does not transmit to other persons. “Youths should be careful in their relationships and they should be aware about HIV Aids,” he said while addressing the gathering

(Contd from P-3) The deadly virus poses a great challenge before Meghalaya since 79 deaths including six children since 2007 due to HIV/AIDS have been reported in the State.

According to Tsering, persons suffering from HIV aids also has rights to get all benefits and they should be treated like a normal person and by doing so, an HIV infected patient would feel part of the society.

To mark the occasion, a group of youths conducted a flash mob at U Soso Tham auditorium and senior politician of the State, HS Lyngdoh flagged off a rally.

An interactive session was also organised for journalists of Shillong where journalists from Shillong interacted with Assam based journalist Naba Thakuria on the topic of HIV Aids.
