Pro-ILP groups save CSWO skip hearing
SHILLONG: As expected none of the pro-ILP pressure groups except CSWO deposed before the special court trying a damage suit on Tuesday.
The damage suit of Rs 31 09 50 158 was filed by the State Government against 14 pro-ILP pressure groups to ensure that they compensate the damages caused during the ILP related agitations.
The CSWO, which has distanced itself from the pro-ILP groups, appeared before the court of R Rymbai, which was constituted last month.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing and general secretary W Thabah, who appeared in person, were directed by the court to appoint a legal counsel and file a written statement on their behalf.
The damage suit was filed by B Khongwir, Under Secretary, Political Department. He stated that the government incurred loss of Rs 31.09 crore during bandhs, picketing and blockades called by the pro-ILP groups since September 2. Criminal acts such as arson and violence also took place, he stated.
The pro-ILP organisations namely KSU, FKJGP and 12 other groups were charged with sponsoring the shutdowns, picketing and blockades which the government said were unconstitutional and illegal.
Speaking to media persons after the hearing, the CSWO president said, “We have sought time to reply to the damaged suit.” According to Kharshiing, her organization would challenge the damage suit legally while asking Government to prove that the pro-ILP groups were involved in the violent incidents.
