SHILLONG, June 5: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Wednesday said they will not join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance at the Centre.
VPP supremo Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said the party had made it clear long ago that it will not work with any party if there are differences of ideology.
“This is a reflection in itself of our stand that we will not be able to give support to the NDA. From day one, our stand was very clear that we will not work with the saffron party even in the state due to our ideological differences,” Basaiawmoit said.
Asserting that the party believes in secularism and the need to respect all faith and religions, Basaiawmoit said, “The VPP is ready to support the INDIA bloc on issues concerning the interests of the country and its citizens.”
“We will always support the INDIA alliance when it comes to issues concerning the protection of the rights of the minorities,” Basaiawmoit said.
Replying to a query, he said they have got feelers from both the NDA and the INDIA bloc.
He however made it clear that the VPP does not feel the need to join the INDIA bloc at the moment even though they are ready to support the alliance whenever it is needed.
Asked if the VPP would carve out its distinct identity in the Parliament like they did in the state Assembly by not joining the opposition alliance, the party chief said they have not taken any decision in this regard.
