SHILLONG: The 13 pro-ILP pressure groups have decided to ‘temporarily postpone’ their agitation till the beginning of next year.
“We have taken this decision in view of the festival season. We would not want to disturb and create any law and order problems since we understand that many of the people are eagerly waiting to celebrate Christmas and New Year,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said in a statement on Monday.
Jyrwa said that they would resume their agitation after the first week of next year and continue with it until the time the Government agrees to implement the ILP to check the problem of influx and flow of illegal immigrants.
“We are demanding the implementation of the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation, 1873, since this is the only effective mechanism which can tackle the problem of influx,” the KSU general secretary reiterated.
He said that the State needs an instrument like the ILP to prevent any future situation where the local people would be swamped away by people from outside.
“We are committed to build a secure Meghalaya for our future generations,” Jyrwa said.
In a message to the families of the NGOs activists who are currently lodged inside jails, Jyrwa said that the sacrifice of their fellow activists would not go in vain.
The KSU leader also urged the people of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills to continue their support to the pressure groups like they have done in the past three-and-half month.
