2-week deadline for non-tribal labourers

NONGSTOIN: The Western Youth Welfare Council (WYWC), the Nongtrai Lyngngam Achik Youth Federation (NLAYF) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Maweit Circle on Tuesday decided to set a two week deadline for all the nontribal labourers working in and around Maweit.

The decision of the three NGO’s came out after their inspection to five coalmines in Maweit West Khasi Hills, Thadteja, Amarsang, Umthongkut, Nirang and Maweit.

During their inspection they found that there were many non tribals working as a coal labourers in Maweit area, and the NGOs came to know that such non tribal labourers were hired by local business men.

“We decided not to allow any non-tribal labourer to work in and around Maweit”, EA Dkhar General Secretary WYWC said.

Dkhar told this scribe that they were ashamed that their people (local business men) brought the non tribals without valid documents to work as a coal labourers, so the NGOs give them a stern warning in this context.

He also said that this decision to set a 2 week deadline for non tribals to leave Maweit area was to ensure the longevity and protection of the tribal communities in Maweit area and the whole West Khasi Hills.
