New book on Khasi matrilineal culture released

SHILLONG, Aug 10: A new book titled ‘MEI: Matrilineal Exogamous Institution’, which explores the intricacies of Khasi matrilineal culture, was officially released by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong here.
According to a statement, the book, authored by Raphael Warjri and published by Riti Academy in collaboration with the Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (Meghalaya Chapter), offers in-depth research into Khasi matriliny. “It offers thought-provoking concepts and diverse perspectives on contemporary social change. Notably, the book integrates biological science through the study of mitochondrial DNA and includes an extensive list of Khasi clans, including new and emerging ones,” a statement in this regard said.
During the launch event, a statue of JJM Nichols Roy, a widely recognised architect of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, was also unveiled.
The statue, erected at Lariti International Cultural and Performing Arts Centre, was sculpted by artisans from Riti Academy.
