Police probe under way into allegations of violence,
dowry demand and attempted murder

From Our Correspondent

TURA, Aug 10: A woman from Patharkata in the plain belt of West Garo Hills has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against her husband and his family, accusing them of domestic violence, dowry demand, and attempted murder.
The complaint was filed on Saturday at Phulbari Police Station by one Morina Begum against her husband, Suzzamal Shiekh, his father, Ser Ali, and several others from the village of Goladigli in West Garo Hills.
According to the complainant, the couple has been married for five years, and their relationship was initially harmonious. However, trouble began after the birth of their daughter two years into the marriage, with her husband allegedly becoming physically and verbally abusive.
“He began demanding money to fund his business and tortured me for the same. Despite being poor, my family has, from time to time, provided financial assistance. Due to his continuous torture, I requested my family to help him buy a tempo,” Begum stated in the FIR.
The situation escalated around 7:30 pm on August 8 when her husband and other family members allegedly attacked her with a log, leaving her bruised and swollen.
According to the complainant, her husband kicked her in the spine and continued beating her within the four of the house, which was locked by the husband.
“I managed to open the door but the family members of my husband caught me and my husband once again continued the beating, even injuring and bloodying my head and leaving me unconscious. I was later dragged back to the house. During the entire incident, my husband’s family continued to instigate my husband,” she stated, adding that her sister-in-law also came regularly to torture her.
At least five others have been named in the FIR, including her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and their husbands.
Begum has demanded strict legal action against her husband and his family for the torture she endured, seeking justice under the relevant legal sections.
Superintendent of Police for West Garo Hills, Abraham Sangma, on the other hand, confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation.
