SHILLONG, Aug 19: In a bid to contribute significantly to the development of bakery and confectionery sector in Meghalaya and empower local entrepreneurs, a five-day training programme on bakery and confectionery was inaugurated by the Directorate of Commerce and Industries at the Institute of Hotel Management, Mawdiangdiang, on Monday.
The training programme, organised under the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) Scheme, aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of local entrepreneurs, fostering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
During the inaugural function, Joint Director of the Directorate of Commerce and Industries department, ML Wanshnong, emphasised the growing popularity of home-based bakery businesses in Meghalaya.
He noted that the training programme is designed to help entrepreneurs refine their bakery products, thereby improving the quality and competitiveness of their offerings.
Wanshnong highlighted the significant growth in the bakery industry in the state over the past decade. “Twelve years ago, many districts in Meghalaya didn’t have a single bakery. Now, it’s much easier to set up a bakery than before,” he said, underscoring the increasing accessibility of this business sector.
The RAMP scheme, according to Wanshnong, is playing a crucial role in supporting these entrepreneurs.
State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU) team leader Shashank B Dash and Directorate of Commerce and Industries Deputy Director, IZ Wreang, also addressed the gathering.
