SHILLONG: The District police will go all out to check drunken driving and brawls during the New Year celebrations on Tuesday night.
Drunken driving and brawls are common during this time of the year and as such police are looking to put in place all possible measures to restrict the menace.
“Our main concern will be to stop drunken driving during the celebrations,” East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang said here on Monday.
“Whoever drinks should not drive,” the SP said adding that the police will use alcometres to detect drunken drivers and a suo moto case would be registered against the person immediately.
To avoid any mischief during the celebrations, policemen will be deployed in different parts of the city.
According to Kharkrang, police will look to contain loud celebrations by certain people which could “disturb the peace of people”.  Even as no mega event has been planned to welcome the New Year, the yearly ‘midnight swim’ will go ahead as planned at Crinoline Swimming Pool here. To add to the challenge this time, 60 blocks of ice each weighing 50 KGs will be put into the pool and many are expected to take part in the event.
