JOWAI: Freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah was remembered on Monday on the occasion of his 151st death anniversary.
To commemorate the occasion, the Jaiñtia Ïasiat Khnam Kiang Nangbah Memorial Society (JIKKNMS) organized several programmes at Madan Madiah Kmai Blai, Syntu Ksiar besides paying floral tributes to the legend.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister, Prof RC Laloo informed that the government through the Department of Soil and Water Conservation has sent a proposal for the development and beautification of Madan Madiah Kmai Blai, Syntu Ksiar, the place where U Kiang Nangbah was chosen to lead the fight against the British. The estimated cost of the proposed project would be Rs 10 crore.
Prof Laloo also lauded the efforts of the JIKKNMS in organizing the various events in memory of U Kiang Nangbah, locally known as U Khlawait Ki Pnar.
Lok Sabha MP Vincent H Pala and local MLA Rubinus Syngkon also attended the function.
“We must follow U Kiang Nangbah’s footstep,” Pala said while calling upon the NGOs to shun running after money and instead dedicate their lives to the service of people.
Others who spoke were of the view that more should be done in memory of the freedom fighter who stood for the rights of the indigenous people.
In keeping with the age-old tradition, to draw curtains on the memorial event an open archery competition was held where young and old alike were provided with bows and arrows to shoot the one-meter-wide target from a distance of 17 metres.
