Govt spends over Rs 40 cr on disaster relief in two years

SHILLONG, Aug 28: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday claimed it has disbursed a substantial amount of over Rs 40 crore to victims and beneficiaries of natural calamities during the financial years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.
According to the reply by Disaster Management Minister, Kyrmen Shylla during question hour in the Assembly, the total expenditure for the financial year 2023-2024 amounted to Rs 7.07 crore while the amount paid out in current fiscal till date is Rs 33.45 crore.
To ensure immediate and effective relief for those affected by natural calamities, the government places an advance fund at the disposal of the deputy commissioners each year. In cases of severe calamities, additional funds are provided to meet urgent expenditures within their jurisdictions, he said.
“The advance fund enables swift action in the aftermath of natural disasters,” the minister added.
