SHILLONG, Aug 30: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has vowed to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take cognizance and initiate action against Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar over the allegations that the latter was involved in illegal activities such as drugs and coal trade in the state.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Sangma said the Union government should take cognizance of the serious nature of the allegations because coal mining is not a state subject and any violation under Section 21 of the MMDR Act is a cognizable offence.
Stating that the NPP has to take Dhar head on over the serious nature of the allegations, Sangma said that even Congress leader Vincent Pala should act on the matter.
He said that if they fail to act, he will write to the Prime Minister demanding action as it is his responsibility as Leader of Opposition.
When questioned whether instances of corruption have decreased under the MDA 2.0 dispensation, Sangma said earlier they had scapegoats which they don’t have now.
Stating that there are instances of irregularities even in the MDA 2.0, the TMC leader said that the government is always in denial mode.
“If there is any serious intent to resolve the issue of corruption, they should demonstrate their sincere desire to identify the problem first,” he said while adding that the government does not even acknowledge that there is a problem.
According to Sangma, it has become their modus operandi which they have scripted so well and they allow things to happen while remaining on denial mode.
Sangma also predicted that the NPP will be confronted by many complicated challenges in the near future.
Recalling the recent desertion of three Congress MLAs to the NPP, he said it was a desperate move on the part of the NPP keeping in mind the undercurrents threatening the stability of the government.
He also made it clear that wiping out any political party in the country was easier said than done. His statement came following the claims of the NPP that days are not far when Congress will be wiped out in Meghalaya.
