SHILLONG, Sep 15: In the backdrop of recent aborted move for a campaign against beef eating in the state, a retired Supreme Court judge’s hard hitting opposition to the idea has gone viral in WhatsApp.
The video clip of Justice Markandeya Katju, former chairman of the Press Council of India, tries to mock at the Hindu belief that cows were holy.
The video clip shows the retired judge responding to a journalist’s question on beef ban by replying that he was a scientific person and he does not think of the cow as his mother.
A cow is an animal, just like a horse or a dog, he says, explaining that beef is consumed by people across the world.
“Beef is consumed in America, Europe, China, Russia, Australia, Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Thailand and also in parts of India,” he says.
“If the world eats beef does it make them bad and if you don’t does it make you holy,” he questions.
He goes on to say that thinking of cow as mother and worshipping her is a foolish thought.
He advises propagators of beef ban to use their intelligence and not go ballistic over revering the cow as mother.
“You are making a mockery of yourself across the world as they think Indians are stupid,” he concludes.
