SHILLONG, Sep 18: The Meghalaya Progressive Forest Workers’ Union (MPFWU) has condemned the ongoing exploitation and mistreatment of forest workers under the Forest department. Despite multiple complaints and requests for intervention, the issues remain unresolved, according to MPFWU president Napoleon S Mawphniang.
On Wednesday, Mawphniang revealed that the union has raised serious concerns about the conduct of certain officers, particularly the Range Forest Officer of Shillong Urban Beat, who are accused of mistreating workers and engaging in unfair labour practices. The union has documented several instances of mistreatment and potential violations of labour laws but claims these complaints have been ignored.
“It has come to our attention that some officers are using their positions for personal gain and vendettas against workers who refuse to comply with their demands,” said Mawphniang. “This abuse of power is unacceptable and contradicts the principles of a fair and just work environment.”
The union is demanding an impartial investigation into the complaints, disciplinary action against those guilty of misconduct, reinstatement of wrongfully terminated workers with full compensation, and the establishment of a transparent grievance redressal mechanism.
Mawphniang warned that if the concerns remain unresolved for another 60 days, the union will be forced to organise a peaceful sit-in demonstration as a last resort.
He emphasised that this action is not their preferred approach and called on the government to address the matter through constructive dialogue under the leadership of the Chief Minister and Forests and Environment Minister.
