HNYF members among four held for extortion bid

SHILLONG, Sep 18: Two members of the group Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF) were arrested along with two others for allegedly attempting extortion and criminal intimidation.
A complaint was lodged at Madanrting Police Station on August 24, 2024, alleging extortion and criminal intimidation bid incident earlier in the month. According to the complainant, an unknown male individual contacted them on August 8 at around 7 pm, demanding a sum of Rs 10 lakh.
Despite multiple follow-up calls insisting on the immediate payment, the complainant did not comply with the demands.
On August 20, 2024, at around 7 pm, the unknown individual, along with two accomplices, trespassed into the complainant’s residence, allegedly with the intent to extort money. When they did not find the complainant at home, the accused resorted to threatening the complainant’s daughter with dire consequences.
Following the complaint, a criminal case was registered at Madanrting Police Station. In the course of the investigation, the police arrested four individuals in connection with the crime.
The arrested persons have been identified as Garnett Gedian Khongwir (30) and Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh (38), both HNYF members, and Thounaujam David Singh (41) and Narendra Kabrambam (29).
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover more details surrounding the incident.
