SHILLONG, Sep 18: Students pursuing Master’s degrees in various affiliated colleges under North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have formed the ‘Student’s Union of NEHU Affiliated Colleges’ to intensify their protest against the university’s grading system, in a bid to push NEHU to reconsider the system, which students say has unfairly affected their academic records.
The move comes after Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla failed to meet a two-day deadline set by the students to address concerns about low grades in their recent results.
The deadline, issued on September 12 when students submitted a petition to the Vice Chancellor’s office, reflected growing frustration over a grading system introduced in February 2023. The students claim the new system has negatively impacted their academic performance.
Iaitreilang Warjri, a student from Shillong College and president of the newly formed union, said the organisation was created after submitting their petition to the VC. “We will now be able to intensify our pressure on the Vice Chancellor to address our concerns,” Warjri stated.
Other office-bearers of the student union include Kevin Joshuwa Sunn of Synod College as vice president, Banjop Marwein of Sankardev College as secretary, Kheinkordor Marngar of Synod College as assistant secretary, Gail Darlene Syiem of Synod College as finance secretary, and Badondur Marwein of Sankardev College as treasurer.
