SHILLONG, Sep 23: Hailing from the village of New Bhaitbari in West Garo Hills, Rakesh Saha has been named one of the 30 Climate Champions of Young India — a prestigious recognition, conferred by UNICEF India and YuWaah, which follows a rigorous selection process involving 1,200 applicants from across the country.
Rakesh, son of retired teacher Pradip Ch. Saha, will embark on a six-month National Youth Climate Consortium fellowship, focusing on climate education among the youth in Meghalaya. His role will include raising awareness and driving action on environmental issues, inspiring young people to engage in sustainable practices.
Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Don Bosco College, Tura, and a Master’s degree from Mizoram University, Rakesh’s academic background is complemented by his significant contributions to wildlife conservation. His notable achievements include victories in various state-level competitions, such as the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society Quiz competition.
Rakesh has also been actively involved in environmental education, organising programmes for school students and youth. In addition to his accomplishments, Rakesh attended the Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) 2024 in Mysore and completed a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme in Dehradun, further enhancing his skills and knowledge in climate action and environmental advocacy.
“Being selected as a Climate Champion is a tremendous honour,” Rakesh said. “I am excited to use this platform to educate and engage young minds in climate action. My goal is to inspire others to take proactive steps in environmental conservation.”
