SHILLONG, Sep 25: The state government has acquired 800 acres of land at Mawkhanu-Mawpdang in New Shillong Township to develop a state-of-the-art Knowledge City, with a focus on sports, IT, tourism, and agro-logistics.
The Knowledge City is part of the New Shillong Township Project and is expected to boost the state’s infrastructure and create a hub for learning and development across multiple sectors. The proposed city will include academic institutes, coaching centres, IT hubs, and other facilities aimed at enhancing education and skill development in the state.
A detailed project report (DPR) for the Knowledge City, estimated to cost Rs 5,400 crore, has already been submitted to the central government for approval.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma acknowledged the challenges faced due to Meghalaya’s unique land-holding system, which required the government to purchase land directly from local communities for the project.
