Discussion on UGC’s 10-point grading system

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, Sep 30: In the wake of the one-week deadline issued by NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and the Khasi Students’ Unit (KSU) NEHU Unit, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shukla, has decided to convene an emergent Academic Council (AC) meeting on October 3 to discuss the implementation of the UGC-recommended 10-point grading system.
Informing this while speaking to media persons here on Monday, NEHUSU president, Sandy Sohtun, said that the VC had confirmed the ongoing process of implementing the new grading system during a meeting held with NEHU’s Controller of Examination.
Sohtun said that NEHUSU supports the demand from students of affiliated colleges for the immediate implementation of the new grading system.
It may be mentioned that the NEHUSU, in a letter submitted to the VC, had demanded the immediate implementation of the Draft Ordinance OC-20, which was approved during the 112th Academic Council meeting in June for the 2022-2024 batch onwards.
“The administration’s failure to implement the approved ordinance despite its endorsement by the Academic Council — the highest academic authority in the university — has jeopardised the students’ future, particularly the 2022-2024 batch,” Sohtun had said.
Stressing that the current grading system, OC-7, is outdated and misaligned with UGC guidelines, the NEHUSU president had said, “To address this issue and prevent further injustice to the student community, we call for an immediate Academic Council meeting to rectify the situation and uphold academic fairness and integrity.”
