ernment is contemplating to handover the housing project at Nongmensong, which has been abandoned by the Hindustan Prefab Limited, to MeECL for its early completion.

Giving this indication here on Monday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said the Centre was not ready to accept any more delay in the project and “therefore the department is mulling to rope in MeECL to complete the project .”

Reacting to a query, the minister said that the HPL surrendered the project due to land issues.

“The project was sought from the Union Government without looking at the land details,” she said.

It may be mentioned that HPL was awarded the project in 2008 to build over 600 low cost dwelling units for the urban poor under the Centrally-sponsored JNNURM

The first 96 dwelling units of a total of 600 proposed units at Nongmynsong, constructed so far, have housed 64 BPL families from Nongmynsong and 32 from Pynthorbah, adding the scheme was sanctioned in 2007 at an estimated cost of Rs 30.44 crore.
