SHILLONG: A minor girl was gang-raped at Paham village under Tikrikilla police station in West Garo Hills district on Sunday.

According to reports, at around 7.30 am on Sunday, the girl aged around 15, who was going to toilet, was taken by two men and allegedly raped her. After she screamed, two villagers came and caught the accused, but finally the accused managed to escape.

The parents took the victim to Bogular Bhita Outpost, West Garo Hills.

She was later taken to Tura for medical checkup as there was no woman police personnel at the outpost or the nearest police station.

In another case in Marbisu Ummyllei village, East Khasi Hills district, an eleven- year-old girl was raped by a 30-year-old man.

As per a delayed report, the incident took place on January 6 at around 3 pm. The accused entered the house and raped the child who was with her little siblings. An FIR was filed the next day by the parents of the child.

She was first taken to PHC Mawphlang, where immediate medical test was done which confirmed the rape. She was later taken to Ganesh Das Hospital, for other formalities. Again they were asked to report on January 10 to Ganesh Das Hospital for blood test and also for age determination.

Mobile units not used

Concerned over the plight of rape victims, the CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing has asked the Health department to deploy mobile medical units to carry the victims for medical tests.

In a statement issued here on Monday, Kharshiing said that the Health Department has procured Mobile Medical Units attached to DMHO, and in each district, one each was allotted. These are used by NRHM to provide service through contractual basis. A van is also used by the Doctor and staff.

Kharshiing wanted to know why the Mobile Medical Units are not utilized to help the rape victims and why the victim (in the case of the girl from Paham, West Garo Hills,) was made to travel 100 kms away for her medical test.
