SHILLONG, Oct 21: The FKJGP Nongmensong Circle on Monday discovered that the abandoned poor dwelling units at Lumphira, Nongmensong, which have yet to be allocated to beneficiaries, have become a hub for illegal activities.
Led by its president, Simon Myrthong, and FKJGP Shillong City general secretary, Shane Nongrum, along with members of the Dorbar Dong Lumphira, the FKJGP conducted an inspection of the units following complaints that the area had become unsafe, particularly for young girls.
It was found that drug peddlers and addicts have been using these five abandoned dwelling units as a safe haven for their illegal activities. The FKJGP uncovered various items commonly used by drug addicts, along with liquor bottles, inside the neglected units.
Speaking to reporters, Simon Myrthong expressed that the failure of the Urban Affairs department to allocate these dwelling units to deserving beneficiaries has allowed anti-social elements to misuse the area.
Meanwhile, FKJGP Shillong City general secretary, Shane Nongrum, criticised local MLA AL Hek for not addressing the issue with the concerned department to ensure the units are properly allocated.
Rangbah Dong Lumphira, Wilson Wahlang, expressed his gratitude to the FKJGP for their efforts, stating that residents had endured many sleepless nights due to the illegal activities occurring in the area during late hours.
