KHADC forms committee to tackle Wahumkhrah pollution

SHILLONG, Oct 29: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday formed a 16-member committee to address the safety, security, cleanliness, and pollution issues affecting the river Wahumkhrah, particularly in the Umkaliar area within Shillong city.
The committee will be led by Victor Ranee, Executive Member in charge of Health and Sanitation, with Teibor Pathaw, Executive Member in charge of Land, as vice chairman. Andy Basaiawmoit, Deputy Secretary in charge of Health and Sanitation, will serve as the member secretary, while M Khongsti, Executive Engineer in charge of Building Bye-Laws, will also be a member.
Other members include five representatives from Operation Clean-Up — Patricia Mukhim, Aiban S Swer, Constantine Thma, Malcolm Najiar, Jiwat Vaswani, and Nanik Kataria. The Rangbah Shnongs (village headmen) of Nongmensong and Urkaliar, along with additional members of the Dorbar Shnongs’ Executive Committee from these localities, are also part of the committee.
The committee’s mandate includes overseeing the safety, security, cleanliness, and pollution control of the Wahumkhrah in the specified area. Meetings will be held as needed to address any issues arising.
When contacted, KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem stated that the Council is prepared to take action against violators in accordance with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Solid Waste Management) Act, 2020, and the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills District Fishery (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
