JOWAI, Nov 1: In a surprising incident at the bustling Iawmusiang Market in Jowai, a wild fowl, locally known as ‘Syiar khloo’, was on Friday rescued by Jarman Lamare, a resident of Moosakhia village and small shop owner.
The incident unfolded when Lamare noticed the bird perched on a wire before it fell to the ground.
With the help of his friends, Lamare quickly captured the fowl and handed it over to the staff of the Wildlife Department for the West Jaintia Hills, in the presence of HH Mohrmen, a prominent citizen of Jowai.
Melanie Passah, Project Manager for the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), identified the bird as a female Kalij pheasant, a species native to India’s northeastern region.
Lamare, who is also a Deacon at the Presbyterian Church in Moosakhia, expressed relief at his timely intervention, noting that local residents were keen to turn the bird into a meal had he not acted.
