NONGPOH, Nov 11: Concerned local leaders from the villages of Lumsohpieng and Lumdaitkhka in the Umroi region, alarmed by the rampant illegal logging by unknown individuals in the Bhoirymbong Pyllun forest, took action on Monday by conducting an inspection alongside Forest department officials led by Beat Forest Officer S Pynrope from the Riat Khwan Forest Beat, to initiate an investigation and apprehend those responsible.
The Bhoirymbong Pyllun village forest, which is approximately 12 acres in size, is community-owned by the villages of Lumsohpieng and Lumdaitkhka and falls under the administration of the Raid Mawpat region.
Speaking to the media, Aiborlang Jyrwa expressed the residents’ deep concern over the environmental damage caused by unauthorised logging in the forest. He emphasised that this destruction harms not only water sources and the surrounding ecosystem but also poses a health risk to the local communities.
He further informed that following reports of the illegal logging, he, along with other village leaders, filed formal complaints with the local authorities of Lumdaitkhka and Lumsohpieng, as well as with the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, urging immediate action to halt these illegal activities. The community leaders have vowed to follow up on this issue.
Jyrwa also appealed to village leaders to collaborate and maintain a shared understanding for the welfare and benefit of the local residents.
