Guwahati, Nov 14: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has hosted the XI IAPT National Student Symposium on Physics (NSSP-2024), a significant gathering for young physicists and academic luminaries from across the nation, for the first time in the northeast region.
The Department of Physics of the USTM in association with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), Regional Council 17 has hosted the symposium during November 12 to 14.
The symposium commenced with a series of ceremonial and heartfelt events, aimed at fostering scientific discussion and honouring revered figures in physics, according to a Press release.
The symposium began on Nov 12 with the traditional lighting of the lamp, followed by a Saraswati Vandana, invoking blessings for wisdom and knowledge. A special mourning prayer was conducted to honor the memory of the late Prof. G. D. Baruah, esteemed scholar and the last known scholar of Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman. This moment of reflection set a reverent tone, celebrating Prof. Baruah’s contributions to the field of physics and his role as a mentor to the next generation of scientists.
Chief Guest of the Inaugural Session, Prof. B. L. Ahuja, Vice Chancellor of Bodoland University has inspired the attendees with his words on the evolving landscape of physics and the importance of interdisciplinary studies in addressing global challenges.
Prof. P. K. Ahluwalia, President of IAPT, spoke about the IAPT’s role in creating forums like NSSP to support budding physicists. Prof. Ahluwalia’s address underscored the value of interdisciplinary research like Physics with Computer Science, on which the Physics Nobel Prize of the year 2024 resulted.
Prof. G. D. Sharma, VC of USTM made his address highlighting USTM’s commitment to academic excellence and the spirit of scientific inquiry and research in the field of Physics. Dr. B. K. Das, Pro-Vice Chancellor of USTM, provided further motivation in his address, encouraging students to pursue physics with dedication and curiosity.
Initially, Dr. Ranjita Deka, Coordinator of NSSP-2024 and Vice-President of IAPT East Zone, delivered the welcome address. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Nitu Borgohain, Co-coordinator of NSSP-2024 and Head of the Department of Physics at USTM, who expressed gratitude to all attendees, organizers, and contributors, affirming the commitment to make NSSP-2024 a memorable and impactful event for all involved. NSSP-2024 promises an engaging lineup of presentations, workshops, and discussions, offering a platform for students to explore, learn, and contribute to the world of physics.
