elhi/SHILLONG: Continuing its tirade against Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma for his alleged links with a Garo Hills-based militant outfit, ANVC-B, Opposition UDP on Tuesday raised the issue before President Pranab Mukherjee and demanded the Chief Minister’s removal.

The party also demanded a CBI inquiry into this alleged unholy nexus.

The two UDP legislators-Tistosstarwell Chyne and Jemino Mawthoh – also met Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and BJP national president Rajnath Singh.

“Both Mukherjee and Shinde have assured to examine the issue raised by us about the alleged nexus of the Chief Minister with the ANVC (B),” Mawthoh informed The Shillong Times over telephone from Delhi on Tuesday night.

“We have stressed that this issue of Chief Minister having nexus with the militant outfit is giving a bad reflection not only to Meghalaya but to the region as a whole. We would not like to be termed as a militant State,” the UDP legislator said.

Talking to newspersons after the meeting with the President, the UDP MLAs said that Mukherjee expressed serious concern over the issue and advised them to take up the matter with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

The UDP leaders also submitted a memorandum, which was signed by the party president Dr Donkupar Roy, to the President and a copy of which was given to both Shinde and Rajnath.

“To ensure transparency and an impartial probe, the accused Chief Minister should resign or be sacked from office until proven otherwise,” Dr Roy said in the memorandum.

“To arrive to a conclusive decision, it is pertinent to order a thorough inquiry by the CBI on the covert political patronage provided to the militants,” he demanded.
