SHILLONG, Nov 29: In an unexpected turn of events, Summersalt was dropped from the Me’Gong Festival 2024, leaving the Shillong-based folk fusion band disappointed and fans outraged.
The organisers cited logistical issues as the reason for the last-minute cancellation, despite the band’s name being confirmed in the event’s promotions alongside legendary rock band EUROPE.
Taking to its social media handle, the band announced, “We are obliged to regretfully inform our fans and friends that Summersalt will not be performing at the ‘Me’Gong Festival 2024’.”
“It is a rare thing in the history of music in Meghalaya that after the event managers sent a confirmation email and kept the band’s name up in their socials, they had the reckless audacity to revert their decision, given logistical problems as reasons,” the band added.
Despite the setback, the band pointed out that the announcement of their involvement had been widely publicised by Rolling Stone magazine and Batesi TV, highlighting them as part of the line-up. Summersalt, however, refrained from blaming the government or sponsors but emphasised the need for greater dignity and protection for artists in Meghalaya, regardless of their background.
“For those of you who are looking forward to hear Khasi music in the Garo Hills, this may come as a disappointment, yet we seek your continued support and assure you that we will continue to give our best to uphold the music of the hill people, no matter what,” the band said.
Meanwhile, the decision sparked widespread anger on social media with fans expressing their dismay.
One user, Shanborlang Laloo, commented, “This is unjustified and uncalled for…not only Summersault but even fans have to be compensated and the government should ensure this does not happen again.”
Another user, Shaphrang Marbaniang, remarked that the organisers should be held accountable for unprofessionalism.
On the other hand, Rajinder Singh Bawa called for legal action.
“Very unprofessional on the part of organisers and event management group. Summersault is a well-known and established group, that deserves respect. Sue them,” Bawa commented.
