SHILLONG, Dec 9: The highly-anticipated elections to the KHADC and JHADC are likely to be held on February 22 next year.
The State Cabinet on Monday approved the schedule for elections to the two councils.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that while the Cabinet has approved the entire schedule, the details cannot be disclosed until they are approved and ratified by the Governor of Meghalaya.
However, sources indicated that the MDC elections for both Councils are likely to be held in February next year, with February 22 being a probable date.
A major talking point about the upcoming polls is the ongoing turmoil in the KHADC where Congress has taken a precarious stance indicating a possible pullout from the NPP-led Executive Committee (EC) in the Council citing pressure from party rank and file.
District Congress Committees have written to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary, A Chella Kumar, requesting a directive for KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngain N Syiem and party MDC Ronnie V Lyngdoh to exit the coalition.
The AICC and Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief, Vincent H Pala, supported the move, citing the need to demonstrate party unity and independence ahead of the elections.
