SHILLONG, Dec 12: Meghalaya’s communication infrastructure is staring at a significant transformation as key road infrastructure projects, carrying a combined worth of Rs 6,000 crore, await completion.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is currently undertaking several key road projects in the state, which have been divided into 17 packages. Together, these projects aim to construct a total of 346 km of road, with a combined cost of Rs 6,765 crore.
While these projects hold great promise, the majority are still in the paperwork or early implementation stages. Additionally, several projects have encountered local challenges and obstacles, further complicating their execution.
Some of the major projects under implementation include the Shillong-Dawki Road, the Western Bypass, and the Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai Road up to the Meghalaya-Assam border, among others.
Out of the 17 packages, two have been completed so far. These include the 16-km Package 5 of the Ranikor-Maheshkhola-Baghmara road section, connecting Rongara to Panda Road, and the 30-km Package 1 of the same project.
However, the NHIDCL faces multiple challenges in Meghalaya that hinder timely construction. One of the primary issues is the short working season in the region. Additionally, delays in land acquisition and other local hurdles further slow down progress.
