SHILLONG, Dec 22: Work on the Shillong Western Bypass project has come to a halt on package-II of the project after unidentified miscreants resorted to violence, attacked the staff and pelted stones on the machineries deployed for construction work.
The NHIDCL had sought necessary assistance from the Ri-Bhoi district administration and asked them to provide police protection but no action has been taken yet, an NHIDCL official told The Shillong Times on Sunday.
The official said they are facing significant challenges in executing the much-needed Western Bypass project since the district administration has ignored all pleas by the implementing agency to ensure quick execution of the project.
The NHIDCL official said that the work on a stretch of the project has been stopped by local clan members between 13.465 km to 15.650 km at Umraleng village even though the land has been handed over to the agency by the Ri-Bhoi district administration on June 18 this year.
According to the official, the clan members claim that they have not received any compensation from the heads of the clan and hence they will not allow any construction work.
The official said the particular stretch is the only access point to the project site of package-II and hence it has resulted in the stalling of the construction work.
“The situation is leading to unnecessary wastage of time in this prime working season for us,” the official added.
