UTP dies at Shillong dist jail

SHILLONG: One of the Under Trial Prisoners of the Shillong District Jail died on Saturday morning after he collapsed inside his cell.

Officials said that UTP Rajendra Rabi Das, a mental patient, was declared brought dead at the Civil Hospital, Shillong where he was taken for treatment at around 11 am following the collapse.

Officials said that the UTP was brought to jail in November 2012 and since February 2013, he has been undergoing treatment at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Shillong. Even after his discharge from the institute, he continued to visit the hospital as an OPD patient.

Police said that necessary formalities have been observed and the matter is being probed.
