No headway in probe into police-militant nexus
SHILLONG: Amid the allegation of politician-militant nexus, the Government is yet to fully probe an alleged case of police-militant nexus involving the then Circle Inspector of Williamnagar, TC Chacko, who is currently posted as the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nongstoin.
The United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA), a breakaway group of ANVC-B had alleged that with the support of the Government and police higher ups, Chacko had handed over two AK-56 and one AK-47 rifles to ANVC-B leader Rimpu Marak when he was part of the parent ANVC to arm the group to take on other militant outfits, especially the GNLA.
The allegation, if thoroughly probed, would prove how the ANVC-B was formed.
It was the weapons seized from other militant groups which were handed over to the ANVC-B, the UALA had alleged.
UALA’s self-styled commander-in-chief Singbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin, who made the allegation in May last year, had also claimed that he had been a witness to the handing over of the arms.
He had also claimed that the weapons finally reached ANVC-B commander-in-chief Mukosh Marak.
Denying the allegation, Rimpu Marak had later claimed that UALA was trying to derail the peace process by levelling false charges.
After the revelations, GNLA had demanded a CBI probe into the matter, saying that ANVC-B was the creation of some politicians from Garo Hills.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing had also written a letter to Chief Secretary WMS Pariat demanding a high level probe into the allegations.
Under pressure, the Government ordered a magisterial inquiry headed by the then Additional District Magistrate MK Marak from East Garo Hills to probe the allegation.
According to an official source, the magistrate could not proceed with the probe since he did not get any cooperation from Chacko.
The source, further, revealed that Chacko demanded that another Magistrate be appointed to probe the matter due to which Marak could not proceed with the inquiry.
The source also informed that before Marak was transferred to Shillong, a preliminary report was sent to the Political Affairs Department on September 13 last year by the East Garo Hills District administration for further necessary action.
The Political Affairs Department, however, is yet to take a call on the matter.
