SHILLONG, Jan 13: While most political parties have announced their complete list of candidates for the upcoming MDC elections, the State BJP is still awaiting final clearance from its central leadership for its prospective nominees.
BJP spokesperson M Kharkrang on Monday said that the list of candidates has already been sent to the party headquarters for approval. The names of at least 17 aspirants seeking to contest the KHADC and JHADC elections on a BJP ticket have been forwarded to the party’s high command for clearance.
“The central leadership will meet on Wednesday to finalise the candidates,” Kharkrang said. He further revealed that in some constituencies, multiple aspirants have applied for tickets, necessitating a thorough scrutiny by the party leadership to select the most suitable candidates.
Kharkrang assured that the BJP is committed to contesting the elections, unlike the last Lok Sabha polls, when the party chose to support the NPP, a close ally, instead of fielding its own candidates. “We are a national party and must adhere to the rules of obtaining approval from the party high command,” he added. It may be noted that other political parties, including the NPP, Congress, UDP, and VPP, have already announced their candidates, with many of them having commenced their election campaigns.
