SHILLONG, Jan 16: The Social Welfare Department has urged the state government to facilitate the much-needed upgradation of anganwadi centres across the state.
Director of Social Welfare, Camelia Doreen Lyngwa revealed that there are approximately 6,000 anganwadi centres in Meghalaya, many of which were established over two decades ago.
“There is considerable wear and tear in many of these centres, with some requiring complete renovation or even condemnation,” she stated.
The department has already conducted inspections to identify centres in urgent need of upgrades. Several of them lack basic amenities such as electricity, while many do not have access to water or toilet facilities.
To address these issues, the department is in the process of assessing the funding requirements. It will seek financial assistance from the state government to carry out necessary renovations and improvements. Anganwadi centres play a crucial role in providing early childhood care, nutrition, and health services. Their modernisation and upgradation are expected to significantly enhance service delivery, ensuring a safer and more supportive environment for beneficiaries.
