SHILLONG, Jan 28: The High Court of Meghalaya on Tuesday disposed of a Public Interest Litigation in the matter of enforcing stringent provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The PIL was filed by Romilton Pahsyntiew.
After hearing learned counsel for the parties, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh said that they are satisfied that the Court’s order dated 16th December, 2024 has been complied with to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
However, the Court issued a series of directives to the state government to suitably mark the speed breakers so that they are discernable from a reasonable distance.
“It would be desirable if the speed breakers are preceded by a signage, wherever possible so that the motorists can be made aware of the need to reduce speed,” one of the directives of the Court said.
The state government was also directed to ensure that speed detection devices, wherever required are suitably installed and maintained.
