SHILLONG, Feb 18: Umiam Lake, one of the most sought-after destinations on the outskirts of Shillong, continues to face mounting environmental threats due to increasing human habitation and irresponsible waste disposal.
Renowned for its breathtaking beauty, the man-made lake, created by the then Assam government, draws visitors with its serene waters and lush surroundings. However, indiscriminate littering has become a growing concern.
The problem begins at the Umiam Viewpoint, where wrappers, plastic cups, and packets are carelessly discarded by visitors. The situation worsens near a nearby parking lot, where temporary shops have sprung up, contributing to the accumulation of waste.
Further along, near the Umiam overpass, makeshift stalls and parked trucks add to the litter problem. The stretch along the highway bordering the lake is now riddled with plastic waste — discarded chip packets, biscuit wrappers, disposable cups, and more.
Experts warn that this escalating pollution poses a serious threat to Umiam Lake’s fragile ecosystem. During the monsoon, rainwater washes the scattered waste into the lake, leading to severe contamination. Environmentalists stress the urgency of preventive measures to avoid long-term damage.
This is not an isolated issue. A few years ago, a viral video of a “plastic tsunami” in Umiam Lake shocked the public, highlighting the extent of pollution. Even the Meghalaya High Court had intervened, issuing directives to curb construction activities around the lake to protect its ecosystem.
Concerned citizens now urge authorities to take immediate action. Many believe that strict regulations, improved waste management, and public awareness campaigns are essential to preserving Umiam Lake. Without swift intervention, one of Meghalaya’s most iconic landmarks risks losing its natural charm forever.
